Sexual dimorphism patterns of the White Sea threespine stickleback (<em>Gasterosteus aculeatus</em>)

چکیده
Sexual dimorphism (SD) in the threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus reflects different roles of sexes reproduction and their adaptations to ecological niches. We quantified SD one population marine from White Sea, collected during spawning period three grounds, each at a distance 5 km or less others. used landmark-based approach quantify variation 44 morphometric linear traits. In total, 749 females 693 males were analyzed. males, anterior body parts are larger — base caudal fin armor structures such as first second dorsal spines pelvic spine. Females have posterior bodies abdomen, girdle third The exhibits complex patterns. Sea stickleback, patterns generally similar other populations species, but more often show male-biased Female-biased size may be associated with female biased sex ratio stickleback.

Sexual dimorphism in the feeding mechanism of threespine stickleback.
Sexual dimorphism is common in nature and has the potential to increase intraspecific variation in performance and patterns of resource use. We sought to determine whether anadromous threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, exhibit sexual dimorphism in feeding kinematics. We filmed four males and four females consuming live prey in a total of 51 sequences filmed at 500 Hz, then tested fo...
متن کاملVariable predation regimes predict the evolution of sexual dimorphism in a population of threespine stickleback.
Sexual dimorphism is widespread in nature and can be influenced by sex-specific natural selection resulting from ecological differences between the sexes. Here we show that contrasting life-history pressures and temporal shifts in ecology can exert a strong influence on the evolution of sexual dimorphism. The bony spines exhibited by stickleback are a defense against open-water avian predators ...
متن کاملPhenotypic variation and sexual dimorphism in anadromous threespine stickleback: implications for postglacial adaptive radiation
Ancestral properties can influence patterns of evolutionary diversification, but ancestors can rarely be observed directly. We examined variation and sexual dimorphism of morphological traits in an anadromous threespine stickleback population representing the ancestral form for resident postglacial stickleback populations in the area. A combination of traditional and geometric morphometric meth...
متن کاملSequential mate choice and sexual isolation in threespine stickleback species.
Sequential mate choice strategies predict how females should alter their choosiness based on the availability of attractive males. There are many studies on sequential mate choice within species, but few have asked whether females apply these strategies to interactions between species and how these strategies may affect hybridization. We tested how previous interactions with conspecific and het...
